“The Former Nara Prison” stands on a hill not far from Todaiji temple, one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Nara. The brick building, descending from the old system of Magistrate’s Office of Nara, was built as one of the “Meiji-era Five Great Prison”that were meant to symbolize Japan’s modernized judicature, but it is now the only legacy of their original structures. This Romanesque-style brick structure, which watched and guarded many prisoners and their process of rehabilitation, still retains its dignity and beauty even after more than 100 years.
